Head south from Anchorage on the Seward Highway to the head of Turnagain Arm. Turn east on the Portage Glacier Road and drive about five miles to the shore of Portage Lake, with parking and the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center. Continue south on the road as it curves around the lake another 1.6 miles to the marina for Portage Glacier Cruises.

Taking the route to Portage Lake has an overlook for great views of the the glacier and lake. it is the only hike with a view of Portage Glacier! The trail starts in low shrubs, then into trees, but is in open tundra by the time one reaches the top of the Pass. Wildlife includes mountain goats and is a good spot for bird-watching.

The next mile is downhill to a lake (near sea level) with good views of the lake glacier and waterfalls on the mountainsides. The glacier flows right to the lake but it is on the far side and not easy to get to. The parking area for this is close to the Whittier end of the tunnel. Worth doing if you have time in Whittier.

2024年1月25日 · Parking is limited. When we visited in the summer of 2022 there was not a dedicated parking lot. At the end of the road to the trailhead there is a Y, where you can park or turn around. There aren’t many spots, so make sure to arrive early! And if you can’t find parking, we read that you can park at the City of Whittier Campground.

There isn’t a designated parking lot, so you may need to park at the Portage Pass Overflow Parking, which is 1/4 mile further, just before Whittier downtown, on the other side of the highway. Another option is leaving your car at the Whittier Bay Campground, which adds an additional 1.4 miles to your hike.
