Midge larvae look something like thin aquatic inchworms. They can be clear, whitish, olive, tan, or bright red. They occur in a variety of aquatic habitats. The aquatic larvae of many midges are called bloodworms, for they are red from the hemoglobin molecules within their narrow bodies.

Observant victims may notice tiny red “spots” that are biting midges filling with blood. The majority of biting midge larvae resemble tiny, whitish “worms,” but those of certain species resemble miniature caterpillars that possess fleshy processes and “false legs” along the length of their bodies (Figure 2).

Midge flies, or chironomids, which resemble mosquitoes but don’t bite, commonly occur in wastewater treatment and lagoon systems along lake shores, along with their larval form, red worms. Midges are often seen in large mating swarms over water.
