Carbonitriding is a metallurgical surface modification technique that is used to increase the surface hardness of a metal, thereby reducing wear. During the process, atoms of carbon and nitrogen diffuse interstitially into the metal, creating barriers to slip, increasing the hardness and modulus near the surface.

Carbonitriding (as well as cyaniding) is the case-hardening process in which both carbon and nitrogen are added to the surface layers of steel at a predetermined temperature usually in the range 800-900° for 2 to 10 hours followed by quenching.

Carbonitriding is a heat-intensive thermo-chemical process. Within the framework of this process, the surface layer of components is enriched with carbon and nitrogen, in order to improve the mechanical properties of the component surface layer.
