Gorillas are herbivorous, predominantly ground-dwelling great apes that inhabit the tropical forests of equatorial Africa. The genus Gorilla is divided into two species: the eastern gorilla and the western gorilla, and either four or five subspecies.

Gorillas live in primary and secondary forest. Primary forest, i.e. forest largely untouched by humans, is very rich in species. Secondary forest develops in areas that have been cleared of primary forest and is characterised by a few fast growing plant species. Gorillas sometimes raid fields at the edge of the forest.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to half of the world’s mountain gorillas. Mountain gorillas are an endangered species, with only around 1065 remaining in the whole world. This has improved since Bwindi Impenetrable Forest became a National park, and the Bwindi gorilla population has increased from around 300 to around 480 since 1991.
