Effluent refers to the treated wastewater that is discharged from a treatment plant into a receiving body of water, such as a river or ocean. Influent, on the other hand, refers to the raw, untreated wastewater that enters a treatment plant for processing.

Influent & Effluent flow describes the process of water flowing in and out of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Influent flow refers to the untreated or contaminated water flowing into the WWTP ready for processing.

As implied above, influent may be the plant's feed water prior to its use, but it may also refer to the wastewater generated by the manufacturing process. On the other hand, to be considered as influent, the wastewater must be treated before being discharged.
